What is the difference between Botox and Dysport? Let’s talk about it…

A Question we are often asked is what the difference is between Botox v. Dysport…

We are here to explain.

Botox and Dysport are both drugs under the category of neuromodulators.  This basically means that once these drugs are injected they work with substances called neurotransmitters to influence the way something does or does not behave.  In this case, the drug works with a neurotransmitter to prevent muscle contraction resulting in smooth, wrinkle free skin.  Botox and Dysport are not the only cosmetic neuromodulators.  Jeuveau and Xeomin are also options.  Many people want to know the difference between Botox and Dysport as well as other neuromodulators. So what is the difference?

All of these neuromodulators come in small vials either as frozen crystal or powder.  In order to make them injectable they need to reconstituted with sterile saline.  This basically means that it needs to be mixed with a liquid so that it can be made injectable.  Botox, xeomin and jeuveau are prepared with the same volumes of liquid and their dosing is basically identical.  Dysport requires a higher volume for reconstitution and the dosing is different. Due to this higher volume some may feel that Dysport can spread farther.  This is not really something we are too concerned about considering the studies performed confirmed it to be safe and effective with a comparable safety profile as other neuromodulators. With that being said, our injector does prefer lower reconstitution volumes.  In fact when performing certain very specialized injections she often modifies her reconstitution volume to a much lesser volume to ensure that the botox stays exactly where she wants it.  At the end, the treatment outcomes and durations are all comparable. Some want to claim that their products are superior to their competitors however they are all pretty comparable and the variations in outcome/duration are truly negligible.

So when asking what is the difference between Botox v. Dysport or Botox v. Jeuveau, or whatever you’d like to compare just remember it is pretty minimal.
